Trenchless Construction Industry

Trenchless Construction Industry

The trenchless construction industry requires extremely durable products that can withstand high levels of friction, torque, and other challenges. At MMP, we support these needs with metallurgist-guided sand casting expertise. We create highly complex, exceptionally durable parts that have been developed with underground conditions in mind. Our team can help you determine the best metal for each application, ensuring your products exceed the rigorous performance standards trenchless construction demands.

Directional Drill Bits

Directional drill bits must be built with integrity to safely endure rigorous underground conditions. At MMP, we leverage our metallurgical expertise to create drill bits that perform more efficiently. Since these products feature complex designs, they are ideally suited to our sand casting process.

Tunneling Cutter Wheels

Tunneling cutter wheels are required to navigate a variety of soil conditions that range from gravel to clay or even solid rock. By focusing on the metallurgical composition of these components, our team creates uniquely adaptable products that are not only strong but also highly durable. We partner closely with our clients to create customized tunneling cutter wheels that are created to meet the needs of each tunneling project.

Additional Applications Within Trenchless Construction Technology

  • Idlers for Track-Driven Machinery. Developed to endure rigorous underground conditions while delivering smooth performance, this machinery is essential for trenchless construction machine operation.
  • Arms and Clamps. These components facilitate precise manipulation and control of equipment. Quality craftsmanship ensures safe and effective construction operations.
  • Gear Housings and Weighted Drivers for Vibrational Plowing. Expertly engineered gear housings and weighted drivers minimize disruption when working in urban areas and enable more efficient plowing capabilities.
  • Lead and Trail Components for Vibrational Plowing. These components optimize your vibrational plowing processes for better accuracy and efficiency.
  • Adaptors for Hydro Excavation Units. Hydro excavation adaptors must meet rigorous standards for durability to ensure precise, safe digging.

Waste-to-Energy (Lumber Mills)

Waste-to-Energy (Lumber Mills)

Also known as energy-from-waste, the waste-to-energy process is a sustainable method of creating heat and electricity. Many lumber mills participate in waste-to-energy initiatives to dispose of their waste wood in a responsible, environmentally friendly manner. The waste-to-energy industry relies on incinerators and wood-fire boilers to create combustion, converting waste into energy.

Waste-to-energy techniques are a crucial element of integrated waste management systems that benefit the environment, the economy, and lumber mills. At Midwest Metal Products, we ensure incinerators have the precise and durable components they need to operate reliably under demanding conditions.

Understanding Incinerators and Their Role in Waste-to-Energy

Incinerators are the most essential aspect of waste-to-energy processes. They help minimize the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, thereby significantly reducing methane emissions, which are a major greenhouse gas.

The benefits of waste-to-energy incinerators include:

  • Reduction of Landfill Waste. Instead of sending pulp, paper, or wood product waste to landfills, it can be incinerated, significantly reducing disposal costs and extending the lifespan of existing landfills.
  • Significant Energy Generation. The electricity generated from waste can cover a significant portion of the earth’s energy requirements. This not only ensures more sustainable energy production but also reduces the reliance on external energy sources.
  • Mitigate Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Keeping waste out of landfills has a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the amount of methane that is released into the atmosphere.

Applications Within Incineration

At MMP, we develop many products for waste incineration applications. Many of our clients are lumber mills that are interested in installing small-scale power generation systems within their facilities to reduce operating costs. The most common products we create for these applications include:

  • Incinerator linings
  • Dryer heads
  • Gears
  • Housings
  • Pulleys

Each of these components is essential to the functionality and efficiency of waste-to-energy incinerators.

Examples of Waste-to-Energy Initiatives

One Minnesotan waste-to-energy center is the Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC). The HERC diverts around 365,000 tons of waste from landfills annually, resulting in 200,000 megawatt-hours of electricity. This is enough energy to power 25,000 homes, illustrating the profound positive impact lumber mills can have when they adopt sustainable waste practices.

An example of a lumber mill participating in waste-to-energy initiatives is Spruce Products Limited (SPL) in Swan River, Manitoba, Canada. The company generates 50,000 tons of wood waste annually, which is then used in on-site waste-wood-fired boilers to generate electricity using steam. SPL’s use of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology creates 100 kW of electricity for their facility. At MMP, we proudly support projects like these by crafting durable incinerator components that ultimately reduce energy costs and improve the environment.

Mining Industry

Extracting minerals from the earth requires extremely durable equipment. At Midwest Metal Products, we combine cutting-edge technologies with decades of industry expertise to create cast metal products that optimize mining operations. The most common applications we serve include:

  • Bushings
  • Cooler grates
  • Wear plates
  • Kiln nose rings
  • Grate bars
